identity by design

This book could never have been written without
the generous assistance we have received from
people across the globe.We owe debts of gratitude
both to those who have provided information for
specific case studies, and to others who have played
key roles in pulling the whole project together.
Our understanding of specific case studies has
been enriched by many local people, without whose
insights we should never have penetrated beneath
the tourist veneer.We wish to thank the following
in particular: in Prague Michal Hexner and Jiˇri
ˇStursa; in Ljubljana Richard Andrews, Stane Bernik,
Peter Kreˇciˇ c,Vesna Grunˇ ci´c-Vedlin and Braco Muˇsi´c;
in relation to the Underground, Bob Langridge;
in Mexico Diego Villaseñor, Ricardo Legorreta,
Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, Carlos and Lisa Tejeda,
Cecilia Martinez de la Macorra, Ana Maldonado
Villaseñor and Luis Gabriel Juarez; in Bologna Pier
Luigi Cervallati, Gianfranco Caniggia and Nicola
Belodi; in Perugia Lucia Vaˇsak and Fabrizio Fiorini; in
Malaysia Jimmy Lim, Mijan Dolbani and Bayo Bayudi;
in Boston Eric Schmidt and Dick Gavers; and in
relation to the Responsive Environments approach
Paul Murrain, Ivor Samuels, Richard Hayward, Sue
McGlynn, Graham Smith, Mariana Castaños, Dora
Boatemah (who sadly died before the book was
finished), Thomas Esterine and the residents of
Brixton’s Angell Town estate.We are very grateful
to them all. The authors wish to thank the following
for illustrations: Asia Publications, Concept Media,
Boston Redevelopment Authority, Landscape Design
Magazine, The MIT Press, the Trustees of the Public
Library in Boston, Verso Publishing Company, Edizioni
L’lnchiostroblu, Tachen, Electa, Arcadia, Institut
Masyarakat, Escala, The Monacelli Press, Thames and
Hudson, Birkauser Verlag AG, Studio Vista, Rotledge,
Uiverza v Ljubljani and Foulis Press.
Producing a book, however, is not only a matter
of intellectual debate. It also takes a great deal of
practical hard work. Here too we have debts to
acknowledge; in particular to Jane Handal, Jessica
Keal, Catherine Smith, Maureen Millard, Linda New,
Regina Mapua Lim, Anwar Punekar and Mario
Reyes.Without them,we should never have got the
book finished.
Finally, any long-running project needs constant
challenge and encouragement to keep it going.
Identity by Design is no exception; and we know how
much we owe to David Watson, to Iva Bentley, to
Christina Dorees, to all the students who pushed
us to develop these ideas in the first place, and to
the supportive climate of the Joint Centre for
Urban Design.
